Today, ocular prosthetics technology is so advanced that there is no reason for people to suffer without an eye or with a disfigured eye. If you have undergone evisceration or enucleation, the skilled ocularists at the Center for Custom Prosthetics will custom fabricate a prosthetic eye to replace the entire eye or a scleral shell to fit inside the scleral pocket. While we cannot restore your eyesight, the prosthetic eye will be detailed to realistically match your other eye, restore your self-confidence, and get you back to a full, active lifestyle.
Whether you live in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, West Palm Beach, or anywhere in the nation, get in touch with us to learn more about our services. With 50 years of expertise in the field of prosthetics, we are experts in the design, molding, fabrication, hand-coloring and fitting of prosthetic eyes that can change your life and put a smile back on your face. We will personalize the process for you and create and fit your new prosthetic eye in the precise size and shape you need.
In general, an artificial eye can be fabricated about six to eight weeks after enucleation surgery and placement of an orbital implant, allowing time for the tissues and eye socket to heal. The implant will restore volume to the eye socket and, when attached to the eye muscles, will enhance the movement of your ocular prosthesis and eyelids. The artificial eye we create is shaped like a thin shell. It is made from a durable, high-quality acrylic plastic, called polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and fits over the orbital implant and under the eye lids.
The process involves measuring and making a mold and wax impression so that your artificial eye will have a superior fit, be comfortable, and have a lifelike appearance. The eye prosthetic is then hand-painted with precise detail to match the color and transparency of the companion eye. Frayed red silk is carefully applied to mimic red veins. Then the ocular prosthesis is sealed to make it durable, and polished until it resembles a natural eye. When complete and in place, most people won’t realize that you have a prosthetic eye unless you tell them.
The Center for Custom Prosthetics is committed to providing you with ocular prosthetics that have the best possible levels of comfort, appearance, durability and mobility.
