An artificial auricular/ear prosthesis restores a portion or the entire outer ear. The artificial ear or auricular prosthesis provides a form of rehabilitation when surgical reconstruction is not viable or not preferred by the patient.
Artificial ear prostheses can be attached to the patient either via a skin adhesive or osseointegrated craniofacial implants.
An adhesive retained auricular prosthesis can be made 4 -6 weeks after initial surgery. The prosthesis utilizes a medical skin adhesive to adhere to the skin.
An implant retained auricular prosthesis requires surgery for placement of the implants. This process has a healing period of approximately 10 -12 weeks.
The prosthesis can in certain cases improve auditory reception.
In the event of wearing spectacles or sunglasses, the auricular prosthesis will support them. Also it is possible to wear a conventional hearing aid with the prosthesis.
The artificial ear prosthetics are made of a medical silicone which is colored to match the natural ear skin tissue. It is necessary to visit our office for the custom made prosthesis.
